If we donated whole systems, I would need to be able to provide certified evidence of data destruction. Then we would be donating systems that were less valuable to the non-profit, and we would receive less credit from the particular regulatory authority that likes us to give back to the community. We would then be storing the drives (long term security risk), or paying $20 per drive to have the drives shredded by the company that shreds our documents (yeah, sledge hammer, drill, thermite.fun to talk about, but I have other things to do than go Office Space on 200 old hard drives). If we continued to pull the drives like we had done on earlier donations, that would mean the retirement of each system would require a lot of hands on time as most of our systems were somewhat a pain to get the drives out of. We had previously donated about 60 systems without hard drives, and I hated that the non-profit had to source ebay for drives, while I was accumulating more and more old hard drives that I had to keep up with until they would be wiped/destroyed.
